When Anthony Clarke began his involvement and love for viticulture 15 years
ago, who would have known he would win a Bronze Medal for his first
official release?
Anthony and his family set out to establish a winery in the rich alluvial
soil and excellent climatic conditions of Moama. From the first planting
in 1998 Silverfox Wines has been awarded the Australian Alternative
Wine Growers Show prize for their 2003 Verdelho.
You'll probably notice at your very first sip that Silverfox Wines
taste a little more natural than most others. The Clarke family are
proud to state that they use very little chemicals in the vineyard,
as they are firm believers in natural fertilisation enhancing the pure
aromas of the grapes.
Silverfox Wines are rapidly becoming known for their superb Sangiovese
and Verdelho vintages. Where the white Verdelho has its origins in Portugal,
the Sangiovese grape comes from Italy and the Silverfox label was the
first to experience the successful combination of the Perricoota Wine
district's rich soil with this deliciously flavoured light to medium
red wine for Australian palates.
There are two varieties of the Sangiovese for you to discover from
a soft and light style resembling a Merlot and one that is lighter,
like the colour of a rose but very full-fruit flavoured. Traditionally,
Sangiovese has been grown in Italy, and is a relatively new variety
to Australia providing a fresh alternative to Shiraz and it can be served
chilled.
Verdelho is predicted to exceed the success of Chardonnay with its
special fruit driven blends. Thee Silverfox varieties are establishing
a fine reputation for their fine and slightly exotic flavours. Perhaps
the 2004 Foxy Lady (a touch of sweet) is the style for you?
Alongside the Verdelho and Sangiovese varieties Silverfox Wines have
the traditional grape wines that you know and love - Mataro, Brown Muscat,
Chardonnay, Cabernet and Shiraz with all fruit grown on the Clarke family
property.
If fortifieds are to your liking you cannot go past the 7 exciting
blends of Tawny Port tasting straight from the barrels. Imagine the
unique aromas when you sip from the Oak barrel's aged Silverfox Tawny,
or perhaps the old spirit-barrelled Whiskey, Bourbon or Brandy Tawnys.
The 124 Tawny takes its name from the Spanish barrel number 124, whilst
the Top Notch Tawny ages in the liqueur whisky barrel from Edinborough.
To complete the range with an exceptional touch, you have to savour
the Toohey's lined Beer barrel Tawny - all giving the Silverfox fortifieds
a taste like no other.
Silverfox Wines opened their cellar door in 2003 right in the heart
of their 25-acre vineyard. It's easy to get there being only 3km from
Moama township, or if you're travelling by river, stop at the '1702'
sign and take the short 500 metre walk.
You'll be sure to remember the Silverfox Wine label and once you've
visited their Cellar Door, you'll be back again.
